South End Courtyard
This small 15 x 15 foot enclosed courtyard in the back of a South End brownstone was transformed from a dark uninviting space to a bright contemporary garden room.
The client wanted unexpected materials, minimal planting, and the integration of the color blue into the scheme. The design included the relocation of existing stairs and retaining walls to maximize space. A simple sophisticated palette of stone, glass and wood are used to animate the space. Frosted glass murals framed in aluminum and mounted on a freshly refinished white wall bring light into the space. The same blue glass is incorporated with the dark grey paving, while black river stone accents add textural contrast and drainage. A custom teak built-in bench completes the space.
