Pocket Garden

pocket garden

This courtyard was transformed into a bright outdoor room that connects inside and out.

details >

The design incorporates ceramic floor tile used in the adjacent interior kitchen, making the courtyard read as an extension of the indoor space. White wall panels are mounted over existing brick walls to brighten the courtyard. Black granite accents the kitchen island, paving, and curbing, providing a sharp contrast to the crisp white. The dark paving is located along the daily access route connecting the upper parking level to the lower courtyard, providing a clear separation from circulation and gathering spaces. A raised corten steel planter is the focal point of the space, with a birch grove defining the upper and lower levels. The planter also provides a visual buffer of cars parked in the upper courtyard. The planting palette includes woodland plants that thrive in this shady nook, and selected for their textural leaf contrasts and white highlights. A low fire feature and accent lighting provide a relaxing evening ambiance.
